Dateline Special on Naked Shorting Postponed – April 6, 2005
David Patch
The much publicized and anticipated Dateline expose on naked shorting abuses scheduled to air on April 10, 2005 has been postponed with no reschedule date identified at this time. Sharon Hoffman, the Dateline producer responsible for the story, originally provided April 10 as the scheduled date but can now only say that the revised schedule is in the hands of her superiors.
The Dateline story has quickly become a story in itself as past delays and extended releases have only fostered discontent and rumors of cover-up by those the story was aimed to protect; the tens of millions of investors defrauded by the financial terrorism of naked shorting. This most recent delay, after a scheduled date was released, only added more fuel to an already fragile group of abused victims.
While I personally do not believe that there was a nefarious motive behind this most recent delay I do believe that the integrity of those at Dateline is certainly a concern. Dateline, having locked out most of the media from access to the details of this issue with exclusive rights to the lawyers and consultants researching the evidence, forgot that exclusive rights carries the burden of ethical behavior especially with such a large class of victims. This wasn’t a “when I get around to it” story although that has obviously been how they have treated it.
When the Dateline story is presented as it is believed, it will be a story about financial terrorism, regulatory neglect, and the destruction of the small investor and small company. Under this umbrella of fraud are tens of millions of injured parties all seeking that glimmer of hope that comes from heightened awareness. Hope that change will be around the corner. But as quickly as the prospects of hope was being provided the sword of defeat was thrust deeper. This time the one carrying the sword was a friend and not a foe.
The story of financial terrorism has been displaced for yet another story about “American Idol” and Reuben Stoddard. Shortly Dateline will bring forth their story on financial terrorism but until then, watch something other than their fluff pieces. Send the sword back into their backs.
Priorities.
